Susan Downey

Originally Susan Levin, she is a Film Producer who is originally from Schaumburg, IL. When she was growing up, she was part of a group of 5 best friends that coincidentally also included my Aunt and Godmother. Susan moved to California and went to USC for college. She graduated and worked on the Mortal Kombat movies before moving to Dark Castle Entertainment and Silver Pictures, where she oversaw the development and production of movies like Swordfish and Thir13en Ghosts. From there she produced features like Ghost Ship, House of Wax, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, etc.

When Susan was producing the feature film Gothika, she met the man that would be her husband a few short years later. Robert Downey Jr. The duo have since started their own production company, Team Downey. They have produced such films as Sherlock Holmes, The Book of Eli and Iron Man 2.

Ultimately, it’s not her fame or her famous husband that interest me. I’m over that stuff. But what does interest me is how she did it. Susan, while I’ve never met her, played a huge role in my hard work in film school and my move to LA. I knew that if a normal girl from Schaumburg could do it…I could too. Obviously, everything worked out for her. She has a dream job, she is starting a family and doesn’t have to worry about money. Myself on the other hand, I hate my job, I love my boyfriend but miss my family back home and I am literally drowning in money fears.

I know I’ll get it all worked out, I’m young. But I just wish I knew how she did it. How she got through her tough, initial years in Hollywood. I just don’t want to lose hope yet. Hopefully one day I’ll find out if she thinks it is all really worth it.

Jon Crispin is photographing this series of 400 suitcases belonging to permanent residents of the Willard Asylum for the Insane from 1910-1960. The suitcases were abandoned in an attic & later rescued by the New York State Museum. The contents are beautiful & bizarre.
